Milestones

With last week’s Falkirk match cancelled Clyde took over top spot and Caley Thistle slipped to second. This game looked as if it was heading for a draw before the deadlock was broken ten minutes from time by a Barry Wilson penalty goal. Play swung from end to end in the first period then the pressure was all on Saints. Steve Hislop netted in 14 minutes after a neat pass from David Bingham but the referee penalised Bingham for a high boot. Craig Nelson held a low shot from Hislop a minute later then in 18 minutes a Stuart Golabek low ball across goal created confusion before the danger was cleared. A high Bingham cross from the left was pushed away by Nelson in 32 minutes then the Saints’ ‘keeper saved a low Golabek shot. Just after the break the lively Brian McLaughlin shot just over for Saints from 20 yards then Caley Thistle began to dominate once more. In 54 minutes a good Bingham/Hislop move led to a blocked Liam Keogh shot then Roy McBain struck over the bar. In 58 minutes Golabek tried an angled shot from long range but it flew over. A Hislop low shot was held by Nelson on the hour mark then in 66 minutes a Keogh cross from the right reached McBain and his shot seemed goalbound. Nelson reacted very quickly and dived to save. Steve Hislop collided with Ian Maxwell in 69 minutes and was stretchered off with a leg injury. In 79 minutes Ross Tokely was brought down by Paul Bernard on the penalty spot – a spot kick and red card were certainties. Wilson stepped up to take Caley Thistle’s first league penalty of the season and he made no mistake. There was little chance of a recovery and it was nearly 2-0 with three minutes left. Wilson crossed from the right and somehow Nelson beat out Bingham’s header – it fell to McBain but his shot was blocked. Two minutes into added time Saints’ John Robertson headed upfield to try to salvage something but was calmly dispossessed by Golabek who started a counter-attack. A fine win against a fancied side and second spot in the league retained.
