First Team Debuts

Milestones

Caley Thistle moved into the quarter finals of the CIS Insurance Cup for the first time thanks to a sterling team display and heroics by Nicky Walker. The keeper was called into action in only 50 seconds when he saved brilliantly from a Jack de Gier 6 yard header. In 6 minutes he took a low shot from Stevie Crawford then two minutes later he repeated the feat from a de Gier long range effort. Caley Thistle took the lead in 15 minutes when Scott Thomson failed to hold a Bobby Mann 30 yard free kick and Martin Bavidge was on hand to tap into the empty net. Play switched from end to end and in 28 minutes Dunfermline's Gary Mason hit the bar with an overhead volley. Glancing headers went past the Caley Thistle post in 32 minutes from de Gier then in 41 minutes from Davie Nicholls. Just on the hour mark de Gier netted but he had clearly handled. The equaliser came in 62 minutes when Steven Hampshire took a Barry Nicholson through ball and scored from an acute angle on the right side of the box. Three minutes later Bavidge was one-on-one with Thomson but he came out to block and he held Robson's follow up drive. Dunfermline pushed hard for the rest of the 90 minutes and de Gier failed once more with a close range header in 73 minutes this time with an open goal. In 78 minutes Walker tipped over a Nicholson blast then de Gier missed with a six yard header in 86 minutes. With two minutes of injury time played a Dennis Wyness volley was deflected onto the bar. Walker made a point blank save in 108 minutes from Jason Dair then Bobby Mann headed a disallowed goal two minutes later he was punished for pushing. Despite efforts at both ends it was on to penalties. There was no contest as Caley Thistle blasted home four in a row and Walker saved two out of three. Ross Tokely netted the deciding kick and the match was won.
