Terry Butcher - Player Profile

Position:
Also Played For:Clydebank, Rangers

Terry is an iconic figure known to millions worldwide through his appearances for the England national team (77 appearances). The most notable image of Terry is of him covered in blood on his shirt and through bandages covering a gaping head wound during a world cup qualifier in Sweden (1989). His determination through that game won him many admirers - especially as England gained the point they needed in this game to qualify for the 1990 World Cup.

As a player, Terry played the majority of his career for two clubs - Ipswich Town (271) and Rangers (127). He also played for Coventry, Sunderland and Clydebank after leaving Rangers.

As a manager, his career has been mixed to say the least. He had a succesful start at Coventry, and kept them clear of relegation for two seasons but was sacked, and then at Sunderland he was in the midst of relegation battles and was sacked once more. After a brief return to playing (with clydebank) he then became Eric Blacks assistant at Motherwell. When Black left, Terry became manager and steered the club through some very tough financial times where they were forced to rely on youth and release 19 senior players (including a young goalkeepr called Mark Brown who some might remember at ICT !!!) Terry is credited - along with assistant Maurice Malpas - as managing the club very well through these tough times and also in nurturing young talent such as Stephen Pearson and James McFadden, both of whom were sold for a decent profit to ease the financial situation.

Terry then chose to leave Motherwell and became manager of Sydney FC in Australia. He lasted only 9 months before being axed. He then had a one month stint as an assistant at Partick before taking over the reins at Brentford. The Brentford job would also be short-lived, just 7 months before he resigned after a poor string of results. Through it all Terry was a constant fixture as a pundit on TV and his next managerial gig came on the international scene .... not for England as many might expect, but for Scotland !!!! He was assistant to George Burley in the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup. When Scotland didnt qualify, Burley was sacked and Terry left by mutual consent to allow the new management team to have their own backroom lineup.

Terrys Scotland job (and his TV jobs) overlapped with his next club job ... here at Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Terry was appointed on 27th January 2009, replacing the sacked Craig Brewster. He was re-united with former assistant Maurice Malpas as the two set about saving ICT from relegation from the SPL. Unfortunately it was not to be and ICT suffered the first relegation in our history. 2009-10 though was a great season as Terry guided the club to the top of the league after a rocky start and elevation back into the SPL. Behind by 10 points at Christmas, Terry inspired the team to go on a 21 game unbeaten league run as a 10 point gap was made up and then overtaken on favourites Dundee.
