Former Falkirk manager Eamonn Bannon offered him a three-month deal - but Holmes pulled the plug on that, alleging chairman George Fulston had reneged on contract details.
He then packed his bags for Australia and was quickly snapped up by National League side Brisbane Strikers after starting out at a part-time club.
Brisbane, a professional side packed with Australian internationalists, wanted to keep the Inverness youngster. However, they pulled out when their government demanded that Holmes be given the national minimum wage for a foreign footballer - $A46,000 a year.
Mark now runs a Football Academy in Inverness but also runs an Academy in Ghana where the players mix football training with educational programmes.
