Milestones
The end of the cup run, but only just. Aberdeen were ahead in the first half and could have scored in the 22nd minute. Rashid Belabed shot from 20 yards and Jim Calder tipped it onto the bar. Most of the action took place in the second half as Caley Thistle pushed forward. Straight from the restart Davide Xausa turned on the edge of the box and shot wide. In 56 minutes Ross Tokely was agonisingly close with a deflected chip and Jim Leighton dived low to save from Barry Wilson in 66 minutes. The only goal came during an Aberdeen breakaway - an Andy Dow chip from the left and an Arild Stavrum header past Calder. A minute later Zerouali closed in on goal and Calder came out but his foot stuck in the ground and he fell injured. Zerouali shot towards the empty net but Stuart Golabek hit it off the line with his knee. In 83 minutes Martin Bavidge was through but he was cynically brought down on the edge of the box by Mark Perry. Surprisingly the card was only yellow. Caley Thistle came very close twice in the dying minutes. Tokely and Bavidge set up Dennis Wyness but he skidded on the sandy surface and it slid past. With a minute left the ball fell neatly for Paul Sheerin 20 yards out and he hit a superb volley which seemed net-bound. Leighton pulled off the save of the match as he palmed it away. This was the last chance and Caley Thistle were out of the Cup.
