First Team Debuts

Milestones

Second played third for St Johnstone’s first competitive visit to Caledonian Stadium and it ended with a slender victory for the home side. There were few shots on goal as both defences mopped up most attacks. Saints started well and Mark Brown was forced to push a Mark Reilly shot past for a corner in two minutes. In nine minutes Alan Main took a Roy McBain 25 yard shot at the second attempt and in 20 minutes a Ross Tokely cross from the right looked inviting but there was no one to take advantage. The opening goal came just before half time from a Barry Robson corner on the right. It fell for Grant Munro a few yards out and his header found Dennis Wyness as Mark Reilly miskicked. Wyness reacted quickly to net from close range.
In 52 minutes a Paul Hartley corner reached Saints’ Ryan Stevenson but he headed over with an open goal. At the other end Wyness grazed the top of the bar with a cross in 55 minutes then he came close with a lob after an excellent interception. The second goal came in 62 minutes when Robson found Richie Hart on the right and in space. He raced forward and blasted a spectacular goal from 15 yards – the highlight of the match. With only three minutes left Mark Ferry fell over Bobby Mann’s legs in the home box and a penalty was awarded. Chris Hay took it and scored. This set up a late flurry from Saints but the Caley Thistle defence held out to secure the win.
