First Team Debuts

Milestones

A narrow victory but enough to send Caley Thistle to the top of Division One for the first time. Gayfield is always a difficult destination but the strong wind made things even harder. Craig Hinchcliffe saved early efforts from Dennis Wyness and Bobby Mann before the first goal came in 23 minutes. Ross Tokely sent a ball from the right into the box then Dennis Wyness turned John Cusick and sent a left foot low shot wide of Hinchcliffe. Andy Cargill had Arbroath’s best first half chance near the interval but he drove the ball wide. The second goal was a long time in coming and it was delayed even further when Paul Ritchie headed home only for offside to be given. At the other end Mark Brown saved from Paul Brownlie then a drive from Murray MacDowell was deflected past. Tokely was once more the provider for the visitors’ second goal in 71 minutes and again it was a cross from the right. This time it reached Richie Hart who chested it down before volleying past Hinchcliffe despite the close attention of Innes Ritchie. Jordan Tait made it 2-1 just two minutes later when he found space following a Steve Florence lob from the left – Tait’s shot seemed to be heading wide when it took a wicked deflection off a defender and deceived Brown. As Caley Thistle searched for a third Roy McBain hit the post, Hinchcliffe saved a Russell Duncan drive then Ritchie headed onto the bar.
