First Team Debuts

Milestones

A thrilling cup tie. The Inverness side fought like tigers in front of a record crowd with the prize of a home tie against Celtic. United took the lead in the 7th minute when Olofsson took a through ball from McKinnon and lashed it home from 12 yards. On the 30 minute mark United were awarded a penalty when Winters tumbled in the box but Calder dived to his right to deny Pressley. A minute later Robertson sent a lob just over and in 33 minutes Dijkstra did well to smother the ball after a goalmouth scramble. In the 36th minute Cherry sent Wilson off on a run but his final shot was deflected away. On the 40 minute mark Shearer blocked a Dijkstra clearance but could only turn and hit it over the bar with the ‘keeper stranded. A minute later the referee turned down a penalty after Wilson was tripped in the box. Play raged on in the second half with Caley Thistle pressing and United hitting on the break. 6 minutes from full time the game seemed to be over when McSwegan made it 2-0 – a good run and finish after pouncing on a misplaced Robson pass. Caley Thistle had other ideas and a minute later Thomson headed home a Teasdale cross to pull one back. With 90 seconds of injury time played McCulloch set off on a run down the right, played it to Wilson who backheeled it into his path and hit home a glorious angled volley from 20 yards. Extra time was lacking in chances as legs tired but the deadlock was broken 3 minutes into the second period. As Caley Thistle pressed forward McSwegan took advantage of the defensive gaps and ran through to provide Zetterlund with a shooting chance on the edge of the box – he took it gratefully and sealed the tie. Time ran out and United went forward to meet Celtic. A wonderful night for Inverness football despite the result.
