Apart from a short shaky period midway through the second half Caley Thistle totally dominated this match. The sun shone and the football flowed as the Queens defence was tormented, chances were taken and the visitors achieved their first ever league win at Palmerston Park. In seven minutes Barry Robson fought his way down the left and his cross was volleyed goalwards by Paul Ritchie – Andy Goram acrobatically tipped it over. From Richie Hart’s corner Bobby Mann headed in for the opening goal. The pressure continued and it took until 22 minutes before Mark Brown had a save at the other end – a John Crawford cross which he took easily. Two minutes later Dennis Wyness was unmarked at a Hart corner and he headed clinically home for 2-0. Goram held a low cross in 26 minutes but collided with one of his own players and was injured. He was replaced at half time by Colin Scott. Just before the break Wyness tried to lob Goram but was too close and it cleared the bar. Three minutes into the second half Wyness latched onto a Ross Tokely cross from the right and was able to pick his spot behind Scott with a neat header. The pace slackened and Queens scored a freak goal in 69 minutes. A misguided clearance spun back towards the Caley Thistle goal and fell at the feet of Peter Weatherson - he reacted quickly and hit low past Brown from close range. This started a revival spearheaded by substitute Brian McLaughlin and seconds later a Brown miskick caused some excitement. It led to a corner which was cleared with some difficulty. The comeback came to nothing and the visitors nearly made it 4-1 when Ritchie’s diving header in 79 minutes shaved the wrong side of the post. The home fans began to leave and time ran out for Queens – Caley Thistle’s long journey proved worthwhile and they rose to third in Division One.
