Milestones

Despite the lack of goals this was an entertaining match with chances at both ends and two goalkeepers in fine form. Heavy rain earlier in the day had left the pitch heavy and ball control was difficult. In two minutes Colin Scott held a Richie Hart free kick and four minutes later Mark Brown did the same from Joe McAlpine. Derek Allan shot over the Caley Thistle bar in 11 minutes then in 16 minutes David Bagan tried a speculative lob from the right towards the top corner but Scott was alert and took it high. The visitors had their first real chance in 21 minutes when Hart centred from the right for Paul Ritchie but the ball stopped on the soft ground and his off-balance shot was deflected for a corner. On the half hour mark Stuart Golabek took the ball off the feet of Peter Weatherson 8 yards out after a good Queens’ move down the left. Barry Robson had a chance in 33 minutes when a Hart cross from the right reached him in a good position as a defender slipped but his shot was blocked. After a good Queens spell Dennis Wyness was brought down 20 yards out close to half time. Robson hit the free kick over the bar. Caley Thistle improved in the second half but could not find a way past Scott. In 50 minutes Wyness made space for himself down the left with a double shuffle then sent in a dangerous shot only to see Scott push it way – it was finally cleared by Andrew Aitken. Four minutes later Scott tipped over a Wyness volley then Brown dived to touch away a shot from Derek Lyle as Queens took back the initiative. Weatherson headed over the bar and Lyle shot wide before play switched back to the other end. In 71 minutes Scott punched away a Robson corner then Grant Munro’s shot back towards goal came off the bar. As time began to run out a Hart cross was headed past by Liam Keogh then Scott tipped over a Hart free kick from 25 yards. The last word went to Queens when Brown had to dive to catch a low ball from substitute Sean O’Connor.
