First Team Debuts

Milestones

This encounter only just survived the cold snap and it brought an end to Caley Thistles bad run. The pitch was doubtful but passed a late inspection there was even doubt at half time but the match was completed. The first half was dominated by the home team but it could have been so different if Graeme Bayne had netted in 20 seconds when he ran through to be faced only with Nicky Walker Walker saved and the danger was over. Early pressure on Arbroath included a 22 minute long range shot from Roy McBain which came close. The opening goal came in 25 minutes when a low Dennis Wyness cross from the right was netted by Paul Ritchie with a diving header. Two minutes later Wyness pounced on a misplaced passback by George Rowe but his lob to the empty net went past. Wyness tried again in 29 minutes but his 25 yard blast was met by a diving Craig Hinchcliffe. The keeper saved from McBain before goal number two arrived. Martin Bavidge sent in a low ball from the right and Wyness neatly touched it in at the near post. In 41 minutes Ritchie was sent on a run by Ross Tokely and he had only the keeper to beat Hinchcliffe blocked with his legs to keep the match alive. During a rare Arbroath attack a minute from half time Tokely handled and Stevie Mallan slotted home the penalty. Two minutes into the second half it was 2-2 when Jordan Tait crossed from the right and John McGlashan scored with a strong header. Arbroath were now right back in it and play was end to end before the winner came in 64 minutes. A Charlie Christie corner on the left was headed on by Bobby Mann and Bavidge scored with a low drive at the back post. There were few shots on target after that but Innes Ritchie drove wide in 79 minutes and hit the side netting two minutes later. Graeme Bayne went wide twice in the dying minutes but Caley Thistle held on to win narrowly. In the topsy turvy world of the first division three points meant a leap to fourth.
