Milestones

The atmosphere in the ground was strange with a rebellious home crowd that slow-handclapped their own team and displayed Irish flags. Caley Jags started well and could have taken the lead. A chance came in the 5th minute when McFarlane made a mess of clearing a pass back under pressure from Shearer. It fell for Sandy Robertson 25 yards out but he shot wide. The home side had their first effort in 15 minutes when a McGlaughlin header across goal was cleared by Sheerin. 4 minutes later a long throw from David Nichols reached Gregg Shaw in space but he headed weakly into Jim Calder's arms. In 30 minutes Vetle Andersen sent over a cross from the left and Thomson sent in a fierce hook shot which McFarlane gathered at the second attempt. In 35 minutes Thomson had an opportunity when he challenged McFarlane for a Richard Hastings free kick. The ball bounced awkwardly but Thomson got to it first he managed to hit over the keeper but also over the bar. The second half started slowly but in the 54th minute Clydebanks Shaw hit a powerful snap shot in the box which Calder did well to palm for a corner. The only goal of the game came on the hour mark. A defensive clearance ricocheted to Derek McWilliams on the left and he closed in on Calder before hitting the ball high into the net from a difficult angle. In 76 minutes a typical Thomson free kick from the edge of the area was deflected for a corner and a minute later Caley Thistle had a fright when a Calder clearance reached McWilliams near the halfway line. He immediately lobbed it back towards goal but it cleared the bar as Calder struggled to get back to his line. In the closing seconds the home side pressed for a another goal. Calder palmed away a Nichols shot for a corner then had to be sharp to catch a Brannigan header. This took the pressure off the home defence and Clydebank held out for a narrow win.
