Milestones
A disappointing defeat for Caley Thistle despite a spirited fightback. St Mirren took the lead in 14 minutes when Jose Quitongo darted into the box and sent a low ball across goal past the whole defence to the unmarked Ian Ross who only had to walk the ball into the empty net. Bobby Mann went close in 17 minutes when his 20 yard free kick was touched past by Ludo Roy. The equaliser came just after the half-hour mark when a Charlie Christie pass found Dennis Wyness 18 yards out he took one step to the right and lifted the ball high into the top right corner. This started a good Caley Thistle spell but it was still 1-1 at half time. The second half was only five minutes old when Saints took the lead. Alex Burns took a corner on the left and Scott Walker rose at the back post to head home. Quitongo should have made it 3-1 in 62 minutes when he closed in on Nicky Walker but the keeper blocked the danger. Caley Thistle began to press hard and Saints had to defend in depth. In 73 minutes a Wyness cut-back fell to Mike Teasdale 20 yards out but he shot over. There were some frantic spells in the Saints area and in 83 minutes the home side were denied an equaliser when a Wyness header came off the bar and his follow up shot was blocked. Two minutes later a Mann free kick 25 yards out was tipped over by Roy. Despite Caley Thistle pressure Saints held on to win.
