First Team Debuts
Milestones
Back to earth for Caley Thistle as they went down 2-0 at a boggy Cappielow. Richard Hastings returned to the side after a two month absence to make his 200th appearance. They played good football and dominated the midfield but could not break down a resolute Morton defence. The first goal came in three minutes when Harry Curran sent a free kick into a packed goalmouth. A Ross Mathieson shot was blocked and it fell for Derek Anderson who volleyed home from close range. Dennis Wyness shot on the turn in 13 minutes but the ball curled past the post. In 19 minutes it was 2-0. Steven Aitken took a Paul McDonald cross in acres of space and hit it first time past Jim Calder, the keeper got a hand to it but only helped it on its way. In 23 minutes a low Mike Teasdale drive from 22 yards was saved by Andy Carlin. As the half drew to a close Paul Sheerin and Wyness both hit shots past the post. The second half was equally frustrating for the visitors but it was Morton who nearly scored a third on a breakaway. Aitken pounced on a bad pass back and flicked the ball over Calder, it came off the back post and was cleared. The best Caley Thistle shot of the match came after a good move in the 65th minute. It ended with a Charlie Christie 22 yard blast which Carlin saved well. Another Morton break in 76 minutes saw a solo run from Stephen Whalen and he had a clear shot on goal but Calder made a great save. Time ran out for the visitors but they came close to a consolation two minutes from time. Barry Robson crossed from the right, Bobby Mann headed it back across goal but Teasdale mishit on the 6 yard line.
