Ross Tokely made his 200th competitive appearance for the Club. |
Caley Thistles first ever competitive match against St Johnstone ended in defeat but only after the cruellest of luck. After matching Saints for most of the game a Stuart McCaffrey own goal decided the destiny of the points. Saints started well and it took a fine blocking challenge by Russell Duncan to halt a good run from Keigan Parker. Two Paul Hartley free kicks caused danger in the Caley Thistle box but the first was cleared and the second headed wide by Ian Maxwell. In 26 minutes a Dennis Wyness shot was saved by Kevin Cuthbert then a Bobby Mann free kick went just over. Saints should have taken the lead in 33 minutes but Stuart McCluskey shot wide from eight yards. Close to the break Mark Brown made two excellent saves from McCluskey. Into the second half the visitors put pressure on Saints and Liam Keogh headed wide in 51 minutes. Cuthbert saved from Wyness then in 70 minutes Keogh failed to reach a cross from Ross Tokely after a good move involving Charlie Christie and Barry Robson. The winning goal came in 81 minutes after Parker set up a Paddy Connolly run and shot McCaffrey instinctively tried to head clear but only managed to divert the ball past Brown
