A hugely popular player and captain with Inverness, Richie was elevated to the position of manager when John Hughes left the club. He was given a four-year contract and immediately retired from playing. He also re-signed David Raven who Hughes was about to let go. This further endeared him to the fans but unfortunately results did not go his way and at the end of the season the club were relegated, and Richie was relieved of his post.
