Neil McCann gave up his work with the media to take over the reins of the club when John Robertson had to take a leave of absence.

McCann had playing spells with Dundee (twice), Hearts (twice), Rangers, Southampton and Falkirk. He also made 26 appearances for Scotland, scoring three times.

After retiring as a player, he first coached at Dunfermline with Jim Jefferies. Dunfermline entered administration in March 2013 and at the end of it in December 2013 McCann and Jefferies were both offered new deals. Jefferies retired in December 2014 and Neil took over the first team along with John Potter. He resigned in April 2015.

In April 2017 he was appointed interim manager of Dundee and was set to leave the club at the end of that season but was named permanent manager in June 2017 when Dundee were refused permission to hold talks with St Mirren's Jack Ross. Neil was with Dundee until 16th October 2018 when their position at the bottom of the Premiership table with just 3 points from 8 games led to his inevitable dismissal.
